We visited a splendid greenhouse that grows freesias (with their intoxicating scent) and orchids.
The owners were wonderful, describing the cultivation process for both these flowers, which is completely different from one another.
The Netherlands, unlike other Mediterranean countries, including Italy, does not have a climate conducive to growing flowers and vegetables. The secret lies in the greenhouses themselves. We were amazed by their technological advances, including systems (publicly built and produced) that distribute CO2 free of charge to growers, geothermal heating, and, of course, artificial lighting where possible.
But also young, qualified staff responsible for entire supply chains.
